By Seeds of Identity
The Campaign "Seeds of Identity" that is developed as an initiative of various networks and organizations in Colombia, Ecuador and Nicaragua, promotes the rescue of creole and creolized seeds inherited from our ancestors as part of a productive culture harmonious with the environment, not dependent on agrochemicals, not predatory on natural resources, thus contributing to a sustainable management of nature and becoming productive options in the face of the effects of climate change and the loss of biodiversity.
General Demands at the International level
The Campaign "Seeds of Identity" that is developed as an initiative of various networks and organizations in Colombia, Ecuador and Nicaragua, promotes the rescue of creole and creolized seeds inherited from our ancestors as part of a productive culture harmonious with the environment, not dependent on agrochemicals, not predatory on natural resources, thus contributing to a sustainable management of nature and becoming productive options in the face of the effects of climate change and the loss of biodiversity. He considers that rural development should propose an agroecological approach as the basis for a necessary change in the search for a new city-country dialogue.
We have considered important the rescue and use of creole or creolized seeds, promote the commercialization and consumption of grains and food products derived from them, while rescuing the healthy food culture inherited by our grandparents and grandmothers, as an important part of the Security and Food Sovereignty of our countries. In this same sense, we consider "seeds as the heritage of peoples at the service of humanity."
Given this, we demand that the National and Local Governments:
1. Promote, encourage and guarantee the conservation, recovery, production, use, consumption, exchange, improvement and commercialization of Creole and criollas seeds through specific programs, policies and regulations, framed in a sustainable use of biological diversity and fair participation and equitable in the benefits that they generate oriented to the small peasant producer (a).
2. Encourage the recovery and conservation of ancestral knowledge associated (linked) to biodiversity protected by indigenous, peasant and Afro communities; and guarantee that Creole seeds and ancestral knowledge are NOT privatized through patents, as they are patrimony of humanity and are a fundamental part of achieving food sovereignty and maintaining biological and cultural diversity.
3. Government programs, policies and laws at the national and local levels must protect the genetic heritage, avoid the contamination of creole seeds with transgenic seeds and prevent the introduction, circulation and use of transgenic seeds (GMOs) for production, research, reproduction , commercialization, human and animal consumption in the national territory;
4. Recognize and support the declaration of GMO Free Zones and Territories (TLT), adopted by local communities or municipal jurisdictions;
5. Promote the labeling and identification of transgenic products and foods.
6. Government policies should promote and favor agroecology in their rural development plans in order to promote the conservation of biological and cultural diversity, avoid contamination of soil, water and the environment and the poisoning of human beings and animals. with agrochemicals. Also as a strategy to strengthen the local economy and the appreciation of peasant, indigenous and Afro culture.
7. The certification and sanitary standards on seeds must allow the conservation, use, handling, exchange and commercialization of creole seeds.
8. Implement and promote national programs and systems for the conservation, storage and distribution of creole seeds in municipalities and communities, managed by the rural community (peasants, indigenous, Afro), encouraging in-situ conservation, the creation of banks of community seeds and training seed custodians, in order to guarantee a permanent supply of good quality native seeds.
9. Special programs are implemented through the competent authorities for the dissemination and generation of capacities on the importance of Creole seeds (their benefits, rescue, conservation), the protection of traditional knowledge, food sovereignty and the implementation of strategies of rescue of Creole / acriolladas seeds.
10. Promote and strengthen the networks of exchange and commercialization of Creole seeds at the local and national level with the purpose of forming a national system of conservation, recovery, use, exchange and commercialization of Creole seeds.
11. Guarantee and promote regional and local food circuits, which make it possible to strengthen production, marketing and diversified and complementary local consumption, aimed at food self-sufficiency, and non-external dependence.
12. Ensure that food aid programs promoted at the local, national and international levels are based on local, non-transgenic products that stimulate traditional food culture and the local economy. In this sense, governments must make agreements with the United Nations World Food Program and implement training and dissemination programs on agroecology, creole seeds and healthy food.
13. Deliver to the general public complete and truthful information on environmental, socioeconomic, and human health risk and impact studies of transgenic crops and foods.
14. Disseminate information at the national level aimed at consumers on the presence of transgenics and their derivatives in food, framed in their rights to be informed, educated and to be able to choose what they consume.
15. At the national level, processes and mechanisms for consultation and citizen participation are promoted that contribute to the implementation of the following multilateral agreements: Convention on indigenous and tribal peoples (Convention 169 - ILO); Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD - UNEP); International Treaty on Phylogenetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (Farmers' Rights - FAO); Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UN); Cartagena Protocol on Modern Biotechnology Safety.
To the Citizens:
1. Support agroecological production favoring the consumption of local products and foods, avoiding the consumption of imported and transgenic products.
2. Promote and participate in conferences or information campaigns on the importance and characteristics of Creole / acriolla seeds, as well as the risks of transgenic organisms for food sovereignty, Biological diversity, public health and biopiracy (theft of genetic resources and patents) .
3. Demand access to public information on Biological diversity and Transgenic Organisms, in order to exercise active and purposeful citizenship.
4. Demand adequate, sufficient, visible and truthful information on the content of transgenics or their derivatives in food, based on their citizen and consumer rights.
5. Recognize and disseminate the value of creole / acriolladas seeds and this is expressed in greater use and consumption from their homes, which encourages their production and the supply of them in local markets or squares.
6. Alert about the risks of the introduction of transgenic grains and seeds.
7. Organize into groups of healthy food consumers.
To civil society organizations (unions, cooperatives, NGOs) to:
1. Inform and raise awareness in the population about the use and benefits of producing and consuming creole / acriolladas seeds and the contribution they make to caring for the environment, healthy eating and the national economy.
2. Promote agroecological / sustainable techniques in productive projects that include the use of native and acriollas seeds, for the conservation of biodiversity, Food Security and Sovereignty, and the adequate management of the country's natural resources.
3. Promote the organization of community networks for the protection of biological diversity.
4. Support the municipal governments that promote the protection of biological diversity and GMO-free Territories.
5. Monitor and report the introduction of transgenic organisms.
6. Make visible the benefits and advantages of creole and acriolladas seeds.
To Universities and Research Centers to:
1. Encourage and promote the conservation, preservation, exchange, recovery, regeneration, sustainable use of Creole and acriolla biological diversity as the basis of our cultural identity and of the food security and sovereignty of our countries.
2. Promote lines of research that contribute to diagnose, characterize and support peasant genetic improvement of Creole / acriolladas seeds, respecting the environment and the cultural principles of the communities.
3. Include in their academic curricula the promotion of local and sustainable agricultural practices, in which Creole / acriolladas seeds are included.
To the Media to:
1. Generate information that educates and makes society aware of Creole seeds and native foods; and demonstrate the risks and threats posed by transgenic organisms and their derivatives.
2. Make visible the experiences of recovery of Creole seeds and organizational and agroecological processes of rural and urban communities.
3. Promote and defend the use and consumption of Creole and acriolladas seeds.
4. Disseminate the initiatives of the “Seeds of Identity” Campaign.
