To the UN, to the WHO, to the EU, to the Council of Europe and to the governments of all nations. We, the undersigned scientists, physicians, representatives of environmental organizations, and others urgently call for the roll-out of the 5G (fifth generation) wireless network, including the 5G network of space satellites, to be halted.
The implementation of 5G will massively increase the exposure to radiofrequency radiation (RF) from telecommunications, accumulating to that already existing with the current 2G, 3G and 4G networks.
Radio frequency radiation has been shown to be harmful to humans and the environment.
The deployment of 5G constitutes an experiment on humanity and the environment that under the prism of international law can be defined as a crime against humanity.
Global telecommunications companies, with the support of governments, are preparing to roll out the fifth generation (5G) wireless network in the next two years. This is done to deliver what appears to be unprecedented social change on a global scale. We will have “smart” homes, “smart” businesses, “smart” highways, “smart” cities and driverless cars. Virtually everything we own and purchase, from refrigerators to washing machines to milk cartons, hairbrushes and baby diapers, will have antennas and microchips and connect wirelessly to the Internet. All the inhabitants of the planet will have instant access from anywhere to very high speed and low latency wireless communications, even from the jungle, in the middle of the ocean or in Antarctica.
What is not openly recognized is that this will also result in unprecedented global environmental change. The density of radio frequency transmitters that will be required is unpredictable. In addition to millions of new 5G base stations on Earth and 20,000 new satellites in space, 200 billion transmitting objects are estimated to be part of the “Internet of Things” by 2020, and a trillion objects a few years later. Commercial 5G at lower frequencies and slower speeds has already been rolled out in Qatar, Finland and Estonia in mid-2018. The launch of 5G at extremely high frequencies (millimeter waves) is planned for the end of 2018.
Despite widespread denial, the evidence that radio frequency (RF) radiation is harmful to life is overwhelming. Accumulated clinical evidence from sick people, experimental evidence of damage to DNA, cells, and organ systems and systems in a wide variety of plants and animals, and epidemiological evidence that the major diseases of modern civilization — cancer, disease heart disease and 2 diabetes — are largely caused by electromagnetic pollution, has a scientific basis of more than 10,000 verified studies.
If the telecommunications industry's plans for the 5G network materialize, no person, no animal, bird, insect or plant on Earth will be able to avoid exposure, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to the new levels of radiation. radio frequencies, which will be tens or hundreds of times greater than those that exist today, with no possibility of escape anywhere on the planet. 5G network plans threaten to cause serious and irreversible effects on humans and permanent damage to all ecosystems on Earth.
Immediate measures must be taken to protect humanity and the environment, in accordance with ethical imperatives and international agreements.
The 5G network will result in a massive increase in inescapable and unintended exposure to wireless radiation.
Land based 5G
To transmit the enormous amount of data required by the Internet of Things, 5G technology, when fully deployed, will use millimeter waves, which are poorly transmitted through solid materials. This will require each operator to install base stations every 100 meters1 in all urban areas of the world. Unlike previous generations of wireless technology, in which a single antenna transmits over a wide area, 5G base stations and 5G devices will have multiple antennas arranged in "phase arrays" that will work together to emit focused, steerable, and similar beams. to laser beams that track each other.
Each 5G phone will have dozens of tiny antennas, all working together to track and target a narrowly focused beam at the nearest cell tower. The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has adopted rules that allow the effective power of these rays to be up to 20 watts, ten times more powerful than the levels allowed in today's phones.
Each 5G base station will have hundreds or thousands of antennas that will point multiple laser-like beams simultaneously on all cell phones and user devices in its service area. This technology is called "multiple input multiple output" or MIMO. FCC rules allow the effective radiated power of a 5G base station's beams to be up to 30,000 watts per 100 MHz of spectrum2, or 300,000 watts per GHz of spectrum, tens or hundreds of times more powerful than the levels allowed for current base stations.
At least five companies propose to provide 5G from space from a combined 20,000 satellites in low and medium Earth orbit, which will cover the Earth with powerful beams, focused and steerable. Each satellite will emit millimeter waves with an effective radiated power of up to five million watts6 from thousands of antennas arranged in a phased array. Although the energy reaching the ground from satellites will be less than that from terrestrial antennas, it will radiate areas of the Earth that other transmitters cannot reach and will be in addition to the 5G terrestrial transmissions of billions of objects. Even more important, the satellites will be located in the Earth's magnetosphere, which will have a significant influence on the electrical properties of the atmosphere. Disturbance of the earth's electromagnetic environment can be an even greater threat to life than radiation from terrestrial antennas (see below).
