The Khmer of Cambodia had a great empire in Southeast Asia between the 9th and 14th centuries, and they also built great temple cities such as the famous Great Angkor, a huge city of more than 1,000 km2.

What remains today are nothing more than remains of stone buildings.

Researchers from Columbia University conducted a study with cypress wood remains found in Vietnam that are more than 1,000 years old, discovering what the climate was like between 1250 and 2008. In these analyzes it was found that there were very dry periods .

This dryness brought bad harvests and possibly serious diseases as well.

Add to that how unstable the monsoon was, causing heavy rains, damaging the Khmer irrigation canals. Today it is known that the causes of this climate change was an effect of El Niño in the equatorial Pacific, which produced, among other things, unusual current.

All this goes to show that climate and cultures react very sensitively to changes that occur.

Another example of cultures that disappear due to changes in the climate comes from the hand of the geologist Gerald Haug, from the Federal Polytechnic School of Zurich, who discovered something interesting in some caves in China, a stalactite that had formed very quickly and from which many data could be obtained, which compared with historical records resulted in the following: two out of three dynasties came to an end when there were periods of extreme drought, which led to uprisings and conflicts.

This means that when the supply of the population is in danger, social confrontations take place.

The blame for a civilization coming to an end, obviously is not given because the monsoon does not appear on the expected date, but it can be said that this event generates a catalytic effect that can destabilize entire societies, make them stagger and fall .

The lack of food once again leads to internal conflicts, uprisings and a host of sensitive consequences.

But if we talk about a decline due to environmental influences, the most significant example is found on Easter Island, colonized by the Polynesians around 800 AD, being by then a wooded paradise where the tallest palm trees grew.

But around the year 1,100 large statues began to be built, the famous stone moais, which had to be transported and erected with the help of tree trunks.

From this moment the cultural splendor began its countdown, lasting until the middle of the 17th century, when the last tree on the island was cut down. With this, no more statues could be erected, but neither could they build canoes or go fishing, which in a way was the beginning of the decline of this culture.

Gerald Diamond defines what happened on Easter Island as the typical example of an extreme lack of vision of the future.

With these data, among the many that could have been selected, we conclude that there are similarities between the societies that collapsed and ours.

The common link would be a selfish use of nature and the environment without any consideration. Today we would speak of a modern society built on the unscrupulous exploitation of planet Earth itself, coupled with a changing climate.

The length of time that it can endure such human behavior is something that cannot be affirmed, but it will have consequences and nobody disputes it.
