Having it at home and eating it from time to time, even if we are healthy, will bring us great benefits, since it regulates blood sugar, reduces blood pressure, regulates the digestive system in general, acts favorably in many people with anxiety, reduces fat in obese people and is diuretic.

Stevia, a plant of tropical origin (Paraguay), has a different behavior from the natural one in Mediterranean climates, where the days shorten a lot during autumn-winter, thus causing an important stop in the growth of the plant (on the other hand, in the islands Canaries behave more similarly to that of their tropical origins), for this reason, the multi-year plant (that is, it can sprout 4-5 years), each spring starts again strongly, re-sprouting new and numerous shoots from below from the roots. From spring and almost until mid-August, it can be reproduced by cuttings (a case similar to that of geraniums). Through this system, 200 to 500 plants can be made from a Stevia plant that regrowth in spring, cutting during the entire vegetative time. It is necessary to take into account not to plant a regrowth that ends in flower, because it will never take root.

On the other hand, spring and summer shoots rarely flower. Flowers that, on the other hand, would never give rise to seeds with germination power, hence the reproduction has to be done by cutting and not by seeds. In this way, if we start from a good variety, we will always preserve the medicinal properties.

To ensure that a Stevia shoot without roots takes root well, the following steps must be followed:

1st.-You have to fill the pot with marinated peat, which can be found in any "garden" or nursery, and water it until the peat is well soaked.

2nd.- Cut the final 10 cm of a Stevia bud about 20 cm high (make sure it does not end in flower). From these 10 cm of stem, remove the 2-3 leaves from the lower part, to facilitate their burial in the peat, pressing hard with your fingers around the stem so that it makes contact with the wet peat. from when it is cut and until the shoot is planted. Better to cut and plant immediately or keep in water as if they were cut flowers.

3rd.-Place the pot in a shady place, to prevent the sun from preventing the rooting and water it 3 times a day (in the morning, at noon and in the afternoon).

Observation: When it is said to put a recently planted plant in a shady place, it means to always put it in a greenhouse or outdoors in a place where it does not get direct sunlight at any time. If it is outdoors, put it in a sheltered place from the wind to avoid excessive dehydration. A shady place does not mean the interior of a dark room or warehouse.

4th.- At 28-30 days the Stevia sprout will begin to stand upright, and when it is observed that a new leaf begins to come out, it can be placed in an area with more sun, where it will no longer stop growing. transplanted shoot begins to take out new leaves, stop watering 3 times a day and water only once, at the beginning of the day.

During the summer, it is necessary to water every day, but in spring and autumn, wait to water until the soil does not feel damp in contact with your hand.

During the winter, when the plant is stopped, water very little, to prevent the roots from rotting, since new plants have to sprout again during the spring.

5º.- After two months of having replicated or transplanted the rootless sprout to the pot, transplant a second time to the final place, which can be outdoors, in the soil of a garden, orchard or field, inside from a greenhouse or a fairly large pot, to facilitate maximum plant growth.

The greenhouse allows production to advance a few weeks in spring and slow decline in the fall.In the strongest months of summer, the greenhouse can be shaded a bit to avoid excessive heat and simulate the tropical climate from which Stevia originates. Despite everything, she thrives outdoors.

6th.- When the end of autumn is reached and we notice that the plant no longer has the desire to grow and fills with flowers, it is time to cut it back, leaving it at a height of 10 cm and taking the opportunity to dry the leaves that still remain.

7º.-To dry the leaves during the summer in a correct way, try not to get direct sunlight, in order to preserve all the medicinal properties. The last minute leaves, when the plant is pruned to go to winter, is inevitable dry

Those in the sun, although in small quantities, can be dried inside the house where there will be a better temperature.

It is an undemanding plant. With organic marinade, there is no problem in overdoing the dose, but with mineral or chemical fertilizer, be careful not to add excessively, because the plant will be very resentful and can even collapse and die.

The mineral or chemical fertilizer must be applied two months after transplanting, little but often (every 30 days). The mineral fertilizer, has to carry more potassium than phosphorus and nitrogen, and be enriched in microelements.

With a good organic compost, one application per year is sufficient, at the beginning of spring, if the plant is planted in the ground, or add 20-30% peat if it is potted.

Stevia is a plant very resistant to insects and fungi, if irrigation and nitrogenous chemical fertilizers are not abused. In case any aphids or whiteflies are observed, it is recommended to do treatments with garlic extracts, Nem u oils other products authorized by Organic Agriculture. If a caterpillar is observed, it is not necessary to apply any treatment, except when the attack is very strong, in which case it is recommended to treat with preparations made with Bacillus thuringiensis (it is an ecological insecticide that does not require security terms).

With these treatments we ensure a collection of leaves without toxins, allowing to obtain all the medicinal properties that the plant contains.

Consulting the multitude of studies and with the experience of hundreds of diabetics who consume it in Catalonia and the rest of the state, it can be said that it is a plant that regulates blood sugar, reduces blood pressure, and regulates the digestive system in general, it works favorably in many people with anxiety, reduces fat in obese people and is a diuretic.

The dose that most of the people who have observed beneficial effects are usually used is: 4 young leaves eaten directly before or during breakfast and 4 more leaves before or during dinner When you do not have tender leaves you can make an infusion of dried leaf (one infusion in the morning and another in the evening) .The infusion can be done each time, with a dose of a dessert spoonful per cup of infusion, or it can be done for two days, leaving a liter of water begins to boil, close the heat and add 4 dessert spoons of crushed dry leaves, letting it rest for at least 30 min before drinking it, so that the leaf dilutes its properties in the liquid.

The dose used by the majority of people who have observed beneficial effects is:

Fresh: about 4 young leaves taken before or during breakfast and 4 more leaves before or during dinner.

Dry plant: When we do not have fresh leaves constantly we can make an infusion of dried leaves. To take the plant in the form of an infusion we will use a level dessert teaspoon (2 grams) per infusion, twice a day: one take in the morning to regulate the day and another take at the end of the day to regulate the night, using a teaspoon for dessert every time.

For more convenience, the infusion can be made once a day and the excess infusion stored in the refrigerator in a closed glass jar for the next intake. For example, if we want to make a liter, add a heaping tablespoon to the boiling water, turn off the heat, stir gently, let it rest for about 10 minutes and pass through a strainer. The infusion must be kept in the refrigerator since with one liter we will have it for two days. We will have a glass on an empty stomach in the morning and another before dinner or going to sleep.

Observations: people with diabetes should check their blood glucose levels to adjust the medication to the levels that result as stevia is taken. Likewise, people with a tendency to low blood pressure and those who are taking hypotensive medication should take into account the possible effects of this plant. Stevia drops as available in some establishments do NOT have medicinal properties.
